TOURISM DEPARTMENT STUDENTS’ VOICES TOWARD THE CHALLENGES IN SPEAKING ENGLISH

Good communication skills are a key element in understanding the tourists’ needs, which might lead to tourist satisfaction. However, in fact, one still faces various challenges in speaking English. The purpose of the study is to investigate the challenges faced by tourism department students in speaking English. Furthermore, there were many studies that investigated students' challenges in speaking English. However, there were no studies that have been conducted focusing on tourism department students' challenges in speaking English. This present study is qualitative research that explores the voices of tourism department students toward challenges in speaking English. The data was descriptively analyzed with three steps: 1) transcribed the data interview; 2) descriptively explained the data interview and translated it into English; and 3) divided the data into several themes. The findings showed that the main challenges faced by students in speaking English are a lack of vocabulary, difficult in pronouncing certain words, and poor of grammatical knowledge. It is suggested that the lecturers should play their roles to support their students in speaking English.
