Abstract


One of the charms that can be the attraction of an area is the cultural activities carried out by the local community. Not only invites crowds, but the cultural interest is also a spectacle center for tourists. Pacu Jawi, or buffalo race, is part of the Nagari party, known as Alek Nagari, which has been going on for generations in Tanah Datar regency, West Sumatra province. It has become a tourist attraction and is regularly maintained by local people and the government. Concerning the unsustainable practice at the folk celebration, thus this study aims to portray the pattern of Pacu Jawi based on a sustainable concept; they are the environmental practices and social and cultural considerations and support thriving economic practices. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive research type, and the informants were selected purposively with a total of 15 informants. Data was collected using active participation observation, in-depth interviews, and document studies. The research results were that the use of equipment for the event might have a severe effect on the environment and cultural attribute less use to prevent the tradition. In the context of local economy improvement, this event has significantly contributed.
